(SPS) -- The Core Value Awards were recently given to two deserving Chieftain student-athletes. Senior softball player Ta'Kyah Jamerson received December's award for self-control. Junior cheerleader Emily Sheldon received January's award for mental toughness.

The award is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the values of Sapulpa Chieftains Athletics - character, humility, commitment, integrity, self-control, mental toughness, team, responsibility, honor, and service.

The winners are selected after nominations are submitted by the coaches and reviewed by the athletics department.

"She stays focused and dedicates herself to her sport," said SPS Athletic Director Michael Rose of Ta'Kyah Jamerson. "She shows up day in and day out and is a great role model and leader for her team and her siblings."

"This young lady came to us last year from Glenpool. Halfway through last season, she needed knee surgery. Emily loves to cheer so not being able to compete was heartbreaking," said Rose of Emily Sheldon. "She started back strong, but then needed more knee surgery. She refused to let this break her. She never stops supporting her teammates, she's always positive and upbeat. She pushes through and remains tough and never counts herself out."

The Core Value Award is sponsored by Tier One Lawn. Winners of the award receive a QuikTrip gift card courtesy of Tier One.
