(SPS) -- Sapulpa Public Schools Superintendent Rob Armstrong is making his way around the schools in the district, meeting with student groups to discuss development of the 2023 bond proposal.
The majority of the proposal, which will take the shape of a resolution that the Board of Education will eventually vote on, will be funds for the construction of a new junior-senior high school campus. The new school, if voters approve the bond issue, would replace the aging and outdated Sapulpa High School, which opened in 1961.
Superintendent Armstrong is presenting ideas for the new campus to students in elementary, middle school, junior high and high school. He is gathering their feedback about the structure, class configuration and classroom design.
Students also have the opportunity to attend public long-range planning committee meetings, which the district has hosted monthly since September.
Principals at SPS schools appointed student committees, with representative from each grade level, to attend in-school sessions with Mr. Armstrong.
Student input gathered at the sessions will be presented to architects and construction managers and considered in building design.
Sapulpa High School students went a step further in their English class. Their teacher, Shannon Lloyd, gave them an assignment to write their own bond proposal resolution for a new high school, as if they would present it to the board. However, they had an extra theme to work into their idea, in order to inspire their creativity. They were instructed to focus on safety and security in case of a "zombie invasion."
Students in all committees shared valuable insights-- touching on energy efficiency, security systems, shared classroom spaces, interior and exterior design and furniture.
Superintendent Armstrong will continue his tour around the district, speaking to students in all grade levels. He will follow up with students as bond development continues. The next steps toward a potential bond election for a new high school include additional long-range planning committee meetings and presenting a resolution that school board members must approve.
An additional community meeting will be held in December.
