(SPS) -- Chieftain Athletics held its third annual ChieftainStrong Community Service Day Wednesday. Student-athletes and coaches spread out across the Sapulpa community to clean up and beautify our school grounds and city. They tried to beat the heat by beginning their efforts at nine in the morning, and wrapping up by noon.
Approximately 175 students pitched in -- cleaning up limbs from last month's storms, picking weeds, and getting rid of litter.
Sapulpa Public Schools' Athletic Director Michael Rose, who organizes the event every year, says the community service day is a great way for the athletic department and student-athletes to thank the community that supports them so much throughout the school year.
Students will take part in a leadership retreat later this summer as part of their ongoing community and leadership development program.
Sapulpa Chieftains fall sports and activities include football, softball, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, Ping Ping dance team, band, color guard, and Marine Corps JROTC. See the athletics schedules here.
In the football season opener, the Chieftains will face the Sand Springs Sandites in the Highway 97 rivalry on Friday, August 25, at Sand Springs. Sapulpa High School will host the annual Community Kickoff on Thursday, August 24.
