(SPS) -- More than 75 community members, teachers, staff members, students and Sapulpa Public Schools administrators gathered at the Sapulpa High School Commons on Tuesday, October 4, to discuss the proposed bond issue for a new high school.
The meeting was designated as a special board of education meeting; however, the bond proposal will be presented to the board for approval at a later date.
The purpose of Tuesday's meeting was to gather community input and feedback about the design and needs for the new high school campus as well as a potential grade configuration change for students.
Representatives from Reed Architecture and Interiors and DLR Group, the firms which have teamed up to design the new school, presented renderings and grade configuration options to the meeting participants, who then utilized an interactive app to take surveys and give input and feedback.
The architectural firms, who were approved by the SPS board of education over the summer, also conducted a Q&A with attendees, alongside Superintendent Rob Armstrong and district administrators.
SPS Chief Financial Officer Kenda Terrones recapped different scenarios for how the bond could be funded.
SPS Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Donia Doudican spoke about research on grade configuration, noting that community involvement and support are key factors in how grade levels are separated in any school district.
Assistant Superintendent Johnny Bilby is leading the search for a construction management firm, and has conducted a number of in-depth interviews. He intends to present finalists to the board of education at a future meeting.
A third community meeting on the proposed bond issue is coming up in December.
