(SPS) -- More than three dozen 6th and 7th graders traveled to Oklahoma City on October 4 to attend the 2022 Women in Science Conference held at Science Museum Oklahoma.

The hands-on conference, which was free of charge to schools, was designed to get girls in grades 6 through 12 excited about STEM. Our students joined more than 1,600 students from across the state in interactive science and engineering sessions.

The sessions "promoted critical thinking skills, science exploration, and self confidence," according to the Oklahoma Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, which sponsored the conference along with the National Science Foundation.

College and university representatives offered hands-on booths illustrating career opportunities available  in STEM-related fields while women in STEM spoke to students about their careers.

Students also got the opportunity to explore Science Museum Oklahoma. SMS Principal Peter Carter and Middle School STEM instructor Janet Johnson joined students for the conference.
