Long-range planning committee meets to discuss bond development

(SPS)-- On the evening of Tuesday, February 28, Sapulpa Public Schools' long-range planning committee met to discuss the next steps in bond proposal development. The anticipated bond project will be for a new 9th-12th grade high school to replace the current Sapulpa High School, which first opened its doors to students in 1961.

The long-range planning committee is made up of school administrators, staff members, teachers, parents, students, school board members, civic leaders and members of the community.

This is the fourth in a series of meetings for the long-range planning committee, and the first such meeting in 2023. The group has been meeting since last fall to give input and share ideas about the ongoing bond development process.

They learned that the increasing cost of construction materials, as well as rising interest rates, will impact how bond proposal decisions are made. However, Sapulpa Public Schools Superintendent Rob Armstrong is confident a bond issue will support a beautiful new school to serve Sapulpa students.

Mr. Armstrong assured committee members he and his team are meeting often with architects and construction managers to gauge the outlook for a new high school. The district has contracted with architectural firms Reed Architecture and Interiors of Sapulpa and DLR Group of Kansas City as well as Tulsa-based construction management firm, Nabholz. Representatives from each firm were in attendance at Tuesday's meeting to answer questions from committee members. Bond consultant Zack Robinson of BOK Financial Securities was also on-hand to discuss financial projections for a potential bond package.

Sapulpa Public Schools' board of education must approve a resolution to call an election before a bond issue goes to voters.
