(SPS) -- This September, the Sapulpa Green Thumb Chieftains are busy creating fall décor and candles and harvesting seeds for autumn gardens. They are enjoying their new workspace in the language hall at Sapulpa Junior High.
The classroom is a larger workspace and allows them extra space for hands-on work, from creating artwork to pouring candles and separating seeds for planting.
The Green Thumb Chieftains skills training program, led by job coach Shawna Keizor for more than three decades, offers special education students opportunities to learn job and life skills, as well as commerce and math.
"While they may not end up doing this as a job, these projects are laying a foundation, and giving them essential skills they can use for the rest of their lives," said Keizor.
In addition to working in the classroom, the students visit
Dr. Dan and Nita Denham's farm throughout the week-- cleaning, caring for livestock, growing plants in a greenhouse, and much more.
The Green Thumb Chieftains sell their artwork, plants and seeds, and plan to have a fall sale. Be sure to
follow them on Facebook to find out how you can purchase items to help fund the Sapulpa Green Thumb Chieftains program.
