(SPS) -- Sapulpa Public Schools welcomes Glenn Coffey as the district’s new Director of Safety and Security. It is a return to Sapulpa Public Schools for Coffey, who served as School Resource Officer for 12 years between 2001 and 2013.
Coffey retired from Sapulpa Police Department last year with the rank of captain and 25 years of service.
In addition to his duties as School Resource Officer, Coffey served on the Southwest Area Tactical Team as Commander of the Crisis Negotiator team, public information officer, basic CLEET instructor, field training coordinator, reserve officer coordinator, as well as served on the Honor Guard.
An organ transplant recipient, Coffey most recently worked as a Family Services Coordinator with LifeShare of Oklahoma.
Coffey brings significant training and experience to the district. He has attended the National Association of School Resource Officers, the Governors’ Safe School Summit, and several FBI-led courses in leadership. Additionally, he is trained in bullying prevention, school security assessment and responding to schools in crisis.
Coffey will be instrumental in developing the district’s threat assessment protocol, and maintaining crisis intervention and emergency management programs. He will act as a liaison with law enforcement agencies, including Sapulpa Police. His first goal, working in conjunction with Sapulpa Police, is to increase security presence on SPS campuses.
His relationships with law enforcement and civic officials, as well as his familiarity with the Sapulpa community, make him the perfect fit for Director of Safety and Security.
“We need layers of security for our schools,” said Johnny Bilby, assistant superintendent. “Glenn’s experience is key to ensuring we have a robust program to keep our students safe. We are thrilled he is working with us again.”
Coffey will manage emergency drills and work closely with the district’s counselors, mental health and behavioral specialists.
“By far one of the most important things is building relationships with students and staff,” said Coffey. “If you can have that relationship, they will talk to you and trust you, and know you are sincere. That is vitally important.”
Coffey resides in Sapulpa with his wife Brandi. The couple have six children, all of whom attended Sapulpa Public Schools.
