(SPS) -- Longtime Sapulpa Public Schools athletic director Stephen Shibley, Sr., was inducted into the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame over the weekend.

Shibley, who passed away in January, posthumously received a Lifetime Service to Wrestling award. His family accepted the award on his behalf.

After graduating from Northeastern State University, Steve Shibley began his coaching career in 1972 at Sequoyah Junior High in Broken Arrow.

In 1974, he moved to Sapulpa where he coached for 12 years. He then moved to Sand Springs’ Charles Page High School and coached there until 1989.

Over his career, Shibley coached 32 state placers, six state champions and ten All-State wrestlers. He was selected to coach the All-State team in 1983.

After stepping down from coaching in 1989, Shibley continued to serve the sport as the athletic director for Sapulpa Public Schools until 2000.

Congratulations to Coach Shibley and his family on this honor. He was the father of Sapulpa High School principal Seth Shibley, assistant transportation director Steve Shibley, and Sapulpa grad Adam Shibley. He leaves an impact on this school district and the Sapulpa community.
