Advanced Placement is a program of college-level courses and examinations that give high school students the opportunity to receive advanced standing and/or credit for college courses. Sapulpa High School offers Advanced Placement coursework in English, Science, Math, History, and Art. Other benefits of Advanced Placement include exempting students from some introductory college courses, permitting students to move more quickly into advanced classes, developing advanced study skills and habits needed in college, and reducing college costs and time to obtain a degree. 

Advanced Placement (AP) Testing

Students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses may choose to take AP exams in May. Students have the opportunity to earn college credit based on high achievement on the AP exams.  The scoring requirements to earn college credits will vary among higher learning institutions. The AP Coordinator will distribute information to all AP teachers. 

Who Should Take Advanced Placement Courses?

Advanced Placement is a program of students willing to apply their inquisitiveness, ability, and persistence.  Motivated students can excel in AP.   Students interested in taking an AP course should consult the AP teacher before enrolling and complete the prerequisites required. AP courses are a year-long commitment.

Course Description: This course will utilize independent study, collaboration and practice activities to expand the capacity to achieve academically.  Students will conduct  research and carry out practice activities in college and career preparation. Interdisciplinary skills will be emphasized.
AP PSYCHOLOGY

Course Description: AP Psychology is designed to be equivalent to a college introductory psychology course. By definition, psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Students will get the chance to assess some of the differing approaches adopted by psychologists, including biological, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, psychodynamic, and sociocultural perspectives. Students will also learn the basic skills of psychological research and develop critical thinking skills. Students should be prepared for a rigorous, interactive learning environment. In May, students should plan to take the AP Psychology exam for possible college credit. Individual colleges determine standards for credit earned.

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION

AP ENGLISH LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION Full-Year Class Grades: 11-12 Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation. Credit Value: .5 per semester/English; advanced class on 5.0 GPA scale Fees: Student pays reduced price for AP exam in May Course Description:  This is the culminating class of the AP program.  It stresses careful reading of various literary classics with rigor.  Students will write numerous essays, either as timed writings in class or as documented papers prepared out of class.  Style analysis training and practice for the AP English Literature and Composition examination will be emphasized.  At the conclusion of the class, students will be able to take the Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition exam if they choose to do so. 

AP CALCULUS AB      Full-Year Class Grades: 11-12 Prerequisite:  Grade of B or better in HONORS Analysis/HONORS Trigonometry recommended Credit Value: .5 per semester/Math; advanced class on 5.0 GPA scale

Fees: Student pays reduced price for AP exam in May Course Description: This class is designed for students who plan to enter universities and major in engineering, economics, life sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and similar programs. Calculus investigates how to think clearly and rigorously about change, motion, approximation, and infinite processes. It is a college-level course intended for serious math students, and it requires a sound knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.  Students who make a score of 3 or above on the AP Calculus exam generally receive college credit for at least Calculus 1.  Not all colleges take AP scores as credit.

Fees: Student pays reduced price for AP exam in May Course Description:  This course will introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes: exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, probability and statistical inference.

Fees: Student pays reduced price for AP exam in May Course Description:  This Advanced Placement course is an elective honors course based on the National AP Biology Curriculum.  It will give students the opportunity to take a college-level course while still in high school.  College credit is granted to individual students by colleges after successful completion of the AP exam given nationwide in May.  The coursework, which is both challenging and stimulating, requires a serious commitment on the part of the student, including dedicated homework time. . Sophomores may take this course only if they are concurrently enrolled in HONORS Chemistry I.  Lab work is similar and equivalent to that used in college Biology courses.

AP CHEMISTRY      Full-Year Class Grades: 11-12 Prerequisite: HONORS Chemistry and Algebra II or concurrently enrolled Credit Value: .5 per semester/Science; advanced class on 5.0 GPA scale

Fees: Student pays reduced price for AP exam in Ma Course Description:  This is a challenging course that will incorporate advanced math skills and prior knowledge from the HONORS Chemistry coursework.  Students will be learning about formation of various compounds, acids and base properties, equilibrium, electrochemistry, thermochemistry and other fundamentals of chemistry.  The course will be equivalent to a freshman year college chemistry class.  Students will need to have very good study skills, work ethic and must be able to be willing to do work outside of classroom time to obtain a high grade in this class.

Fees: Student pays reduced price for AP exam in May Course Description:  This is a college level course.  The goal of AP Environmental Science is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.  Environmental Science is interdisciplinary; it embraces a wide variety of topics from different areas of study.  The coursework, which is both challenging and stimulating, requires a serious commitment on the part of the student, including dedicated homework time.

Course Description: AP Human Geography is an introductory college-level human geography course. Students cultivate their understanding of human geography through data and geographic analyses as they explore topics like patterns and spatial organization, human impacts and interactions with their environment, and spatial processes and societal changes.

Fees: Student pays reduced price for AP exam in May Course Description: This course is intended to prepare the student for college courses and the Advanced Placement exam for college credit. It requires a good deal of reading and writing. Special outside readings, including important novels or philosophical works of the era, are required twice each semester.  The course will focus on the evolving history, art and philosophies of Europe beginning pre Renaissance and continuing through modern day. Topics include: The Renaissance, age of Discovery, the Baroque, the age of Revolutions, the rise of democracies, Napoleonic Wars, World Wars, etc.

Course Description: This course in United States History is designed to provide students with analytical skills and enduring understandings necessary to deal critically with problems and materials in United States history.  The course is a survey of the nation’s history from 1492 to the present using a college-level textbook.  Students are also required to write college-level essays, read and interpret materials and participate in class discussion in preparation for the AP exam. This course will prepare the student to take the US History AP test for college credit.
