Sen. James Leewright(SPS) -- Oklahoma Senator James Leewright (R-OK, District 12) visited Sapulpa Junior High for Constitution Day.

The senator took over as teacher for the day in Coach Rick Patterson's government classes. Sen. Leewright explained to 9th graders the history of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the branches of government and each branch's level of power.

He also explained the importance of getting in touch with your state lawmakers in order to help enact legislative change.

Sen. Leewright, who serves Creek County and part of Tulsa County, was elected to the state senate in 2016. Previously he served as a state Representative. He founded and owns a successful Sapulpa-based construction and restoration company and earlier worked at Williams Companies prior to running for office.

Sen. Leewright visits schools regularly on Constitution Day and throughout the year. He says interacting with students is the best part of his job as a state legislator as he works on behalf of Oklahoma schools.

Constitution Day is observed annually on September 17, the day in 1787 that delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia. Each student received a pocket Constitution.
