Board reorganizes, extends Supt. Armstrong's contract

July meeting of the Sapulpa School Board of Education(SPS) - Welcome back, Madam President.

Melinda Ryan has taken over the leadership of the Sapulpa School Board of Education after the voting members approved the Reorganization of the Board during its meeting on July 15.

In addition to Mrs. Ryan, Steve McCormick was approved as 1st Vice President, and Wayne Richards was approved to remain as 2nd Vice President.

“I certainly want to thank Larry for your past year as President,” said Superintendent Rob Armstrong of Larry Hoover who had served as President and continues to represent District 2.

Following the reorganization, the Board moved on to the Consent portion of the meeting. The month of July is the start of the new fiscal year and typically when many contracts are renewed, and when new items are introduced, such as:

  • Renewal of Istation, the software used to fulfill the requirements of the Reading Sufficiency Act.
  • Establishment of the Pamela Berry Memorial Scholarship which will award disbursements annually to selected, qualified students.
  • Edgenuity, a learning management system for Sapulpa Virtual Academy grades 6 through 12.
  • Seesaw, a learning management system for students in Pre-K through 2nd grades.
  • Acellus, a learning management system for Sapulpa Virtual Academy students in grades K through 5.
  • Two grants from Oklahoma Excel for our science curriculum
  • YurView agreement to televise the Sapulpa vs Sand Springs football game as the Cox Communications Game of the Week on Aug. 28, 2020.

“That gives us a comprehensive package for any virtual services that we need to provide this next year,” said Armstrong of the learning management systems.

In Action Items, the Board approved updates to Policy 311 Purchasing Procedures, Policy 540.2 Student Attendance, and Policy 225 Internet-Based Instruction. A new procedure page for Policy 540.2 was also approved.

After the Board's return from Executive Session, Mrs. Ryan reported that the Board agreed to extend the contract of Superintendent Armstrong through June 30, 2023.

A special meeting of the Sapulpa Board of Education will be held later this month. The date has yet to be determined.
