Pings honored during March board meeting

Sapulpa Ping Pings(SPS) -- If you win a national championship, you better believe you will be asked to talk about the experience and to bring your trophy to a school board meeting.

That was the case for the Sapulpa Ping Pings Dance Team on Monday night. Fourteen members plus coaches Molly Heritage and Jennifer Gardella brought along the hardware they won in Orlando last month, including the National Championship trophy that stands nearly 4-feet tall.

The school board and Supt. Rob Armstrong congratulated the young ladies on their achievement and thanked them for their hard work and how they represent Sapulpa.

As for the meeting, the Consent Agenda included the typical monthly purchase order encumbrances and fundraisers, as well as yearbook contracts for 2020-21, athletic competitions, a software service agreement, and an agreement with an architecture firm as the district looks ahead to the upcoming bond in 2023. All items on the Consent Agenda were approved.

The board approved - with a few amendments to be added - the updated 544.1.3 Student Activity Drug Testing Policy. Included in the updated policy:
  • A mentor, in lieu of or with a parent/guardian, may attend the meeting with school administration following a positive test.
  • Follow-up tests have been pushed back from 15 days to 30 days.
  • Opportunity to reduce 60-day suspension to 30 days following a second offense.
  • An appeal process following a third positive test.
  • Students requesting a review will be allowed to participate in team practices, meetings, and activities, with exception to competitions, until the review is completed.
  • Sixth and 7th grade students competing in extra-curricular activities will be included in drug tests.
  • Offenses between 6th and 8th grades will be cleared once a student moves to 9th grade.

The updated policy is expected to go into effect on July 1, 2020 with all students reverting back to a clean slate with zero offenses.

The board unanimously approved the sale of a $9,910,000 General Obligation Bond that was voted on by the public on Aug. 26, 2014. The G.O. Bond will be available on April 21, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. The funds received from the sale will be used to make a payment on the $27.6 million Lease Revenue Bond passed by Creek County voters.
