Sapulpa honors Moore XC runners

#10MOOREminutes(SPS) -- Students, educators, and members of the community came together on the track at Collins Stadium Thursday morning to honor the Moore student-athletes that were tragically struck by a vehicle last month.

Six members of the cross country team were hit after they had just started a practice run on Feb. 3. Three of those student-athletes - Yuridia Martinez, Rachel Freeman, and Kolby Crum - died as a result of their injuries.

The Moore High School Track & Field team requested that people gather across the state to participate in a 10-minute run on March 12 or 13. The run is being tagged #10MOOREminutes. Ten minutes represents what the runners were doing when they were struck.

Sapulpa High School Cross Country coach Debbie Williams said there was never a question about Sapulpa’s participation.

“We consider it an honor to fulfill this small request,” said coach Williams. “If we can help in any way to show collective support for the families, for the students, for the school, we want to be a part of that.”

The team hosted its #10MOOREminutes event before school started.

High school sports is a tight-knit association that brings student-athletes, coaches, parents, and communities together. So, when a student-athlete is injured, it seems as though everyone, despite school colors, feels that pain.

“It’s hard to even imagine how the Moore kids feel,” said Leona Crowl, a junior cross country runner. “I think it’s really important that we support our community, even though they’re far away, it’s still our community.”

Moore High School has requested that those participating share photos on social media and include the hashtag #10MOOREminutes.
