Megan Cannon fills STEM Coordinator position

Megan Cannon(SPS) -- A familiar face has taken on a new position at Sapulpa Public Schools.

Megan Cannon returned to the district on Sept. 23 to fill the newly-created role of STEM Coordinator. The position will be part of the Teaching and Learning team with a focus on science.

“I have a passion for science,” said Mrs. Cannon. “I want all kids in Sapulpa to be curious about the world, I want them to ask questions about what’s going on around them and want to find out more about it.”

Mrs. Cannon will play a supporting role for teachers as she focuses on instructional strategies and what is happening in the classroom daily.

“The standards for science are three dimensional so it’s really about getting kids not just to learn the content but it’s about thinking like a scientist and doing science.”

This is her third stint at Sapulpa schools. Mrs. Cannon was born and raised in Sapulpa as well as being a 2005 graduate of Sapulpa High School. She came back in 2011 to teach 3rd grade at Jefferson Heights Elementary before moving to Freedom Elementary where she taught 5th-grade science and social studies. Following Freedom, Mrs. Cannon moved to Sapulpa Middle School where she taught STEM.

After her second year at the middle school, Mrs. Cannon left for Oklahoma City and the State Department of Education where she was Director of Science and Engineering Education.

“My passion turned from working with kids to working with teachers and I really wanted to be in a position where I could help teachers.”

When the STEM Coordinator position opened here, combined with the knowledge she gained by working at the state department, Mrs. Cannon knew it was time to come back.

“This was really my dream job,” she said. “I love Sapulpa. I love the teachers and the students and to help them with science, I just couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Mrs. Cannon got a late start on the school year but for good reason. She gave birth to her first child two months ago - a little boy named Owen.

Welcome back to Sapulpa, Mrs. Cannon.
