Col. Paul Lockhart speaks to students at Liberty STEM(SPS) - It was an out-of-this-world experience for students at Liberty Elementary STEM Academy on Monday.

They received a visit from former astronaut Col. Paul Lockhart and Space Education specialists from Space Foundation. The visit was part of Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance’s Flight Night Space Week, an event to build on students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Col. Lockhart spoke during two assemblies about the 663 hours he spent in space on the International Space Station.

While Lockhart spoke, Space Education specialists were in classrooms conducting activities with other students.

In one setting, students created “rockets” out of everyday materials - nothing combustible - and launched them down the hallway.

Col. Lockhart and Space Foundation are in the area all week and will host a free community event on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Hardesty Arts Center at 101 E. Archer St. in Tulsa from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be an astronaut chat and interactive activities such as robotics, electromagnetic force, galaxy art, and more.
