SAPULPA PUBLIC SCHOOLS - When you see Adam Zlata make sure you tell him, "Congratulations!"

The Sapulpa High School junior competed in the inter-service JROTC National Championship March 22-24 in Port Clinton, Ohio. He was one of 144 marksmen who competed as well as being the lone representative of the state of Oklahoma.

Adam finished 23rd in the Marine Corps and 67th overall for all the services. He also earned his Silver Medal - the Excellence in Competition Badge. Adam picked up an additional 6 points at the competition toward his Distinguished Badge.

Adam made it this far as a result of his performance in competitions this school year.

Adam, a National Ranked Marksman, entered the Postal Qualification in November. His scores there resulted in an invitation to the Marine Corps Service Championship in February, where he placed 19th. That performance is what qualified him for this event during Spring Break.

To put his accomplishment in perspective, Major Jerry Swepston said between 15,000 and 20,000 JROTC cadets around the world entered the competition in November.

When Adam first approached Major Swepston about a tryout three years ago he had never taken a shot. Now, he's only a couple of points shy of being a National Distinguished Shooter, and perhaps a national champion.

Congratulations, Adam!
