Students participate during Chieftain Team Building Day at Sapulpa High School(SPS) -- Approximately 60 students participated in the first-ever Chieftain Team Building Day on Wednesday.

Chieftain Team Building Day was an opportunity for students in 9th through 12th grades to come together to build relationships and trust with those outside their inner circle in an effort to become leaders in school and in the community. It’s the first of a three-part program sponsored by Sapulpa Chieftains Athletics.

“The Team Building Day is a morning of games and activities meant to forge a connection and build relationships among the students,” said Michael Rose, Athletic Director for Sapulpa Public Schools. “Getting to know others helps you understand them better, which in turn helps everybody work better together.”

In addition to the Team Building Day, the students will take part in Chieftain Community Service Day on July 7 and participate in the Chieftain Leadership Retreat on Aug. 5.

The Chieftain Community Service Day is a day for youth to give back to the community by picking up trash, simple landscaping, cleaning, etc. for those that gave to the schools and its programs during the school year.

“It’s important to teach students the act of kindness, benevolence. The level of support our schools receive from the community is amazing and the Community Service Day is a way for us to show our appreciation and to give back,” said Rose.

The Chieftain Leadership Retreat will be held at New Life Ranch in Colcord, Okla. It’s a day for students to learn about each other through a ropes course and games while pushing themselves and developing leadership skills.

Two weeks later on Aug. 19, the students will head back down the hallways for the first day of school and take with them the lessons they learned during the summer.
